I designed this decal for our soon-to-be-born son's nursery 5 years ago. I wanted to make something for my son, something personal. So I created this image based on a family journey.
The image is a story of my family from beginning to where we were at then. The story goes like this: Kevin and I met in NYC working at a design/animation company, get to know each other's interests, fell in love, traveling together, and moved to New Zealand, and now expecting a baby boy. I didn't want to make it too narrative. So I collected our memoirs, and created a design piece.
It was quite a process making it. I had to hire a company in California to make the customised decal. I was very happy with how it turned out.
The entire piece, picture taken 5 years ago by Kevin.
My favorite area, Kevin and I are looking down our son's crib.
But after almost 5 years, facing a big move soon(in 4 months), I wanted to take it down a way before the move. I didn't know how hard or simple the process would be, and I didn't want to wait to find out till the last minute. So I peeled it off yesterday. Overall, it wasn't too hard. I just need to patch up a few area of paint chipped. But it was definitely one of the defining moments, it really felt like an end of era. I wasn't sad. I was more excited about our new adventure. I think Kevin was sad about it, tho. I didn't tell him what was going to happen. He just found the empty wall after work. I feel bad about it, but I hope he understands that it had to happen for me. I had to get rid of it by myself. It symbolised to me as ending a chapter of my life, and starting a new one.
